Meta strikes deals with publishers for real-time news in Meta AI

Meta has established commercial AI data licensing deals with major news organizations to provide real-time global, entertainment, and breaking news coverage within its Meta AI chatbot. Announced on Friday, this integration means Meta AI will now respond to news-related user queries by surfacing information and direct links sourced from these publishers, helping users discover timely and relevant content.
These responses will also feature links to full articles, enabling users to visit the publishers' sites for deeper exploration. Meta states this approach will help its partner news outlets connect with broader audiences.
Initial publishing partners include CNN, Fox News, Fox Sports, Le Monde Group, the People Inc. portfolio of media brands, The Daily Caller, The Washington Examiner, and USA Today.
Meta plans to expand this network with additional partnerships over time.
This strategic shift follows Meta's broader move away from positioning its platforms as primary news hubs, exemplified by retiring Facebook's dedicated "News" tab in 2024. While the company ceased direct compensation programs for news publishers in 2022, these new agreements represent a renewed investment to enhance its AI with real-time news access.
“We are dedicated to making Meta AI more responsive, accurate, and well-rounded,” Meta explained in a blog post. “Real-time events pose a challenge for existing AI systems, but by integrating a diverse array of news sources, we aim to significantly improve Meta AI’s capacity to deliver current, pertinent information from a wide spectrum of viewpoints and content formats.”
The initiative is part of Meta's effort to attract more users to its AI assistant amid intensifying competition. It also seeks to reinforce the company's standing in the AI landscape following the controversial rollout of Llama 4 earlier this year, which faced criticism over performance issues.
