Mark Zuckerberg Forms Elite AI Team to Develop Superintelligence

According to a Bloomberg report, CEO Mark Zuckerberg announced in an internal memo the formation of Meta's new “Meta Superintelligence Labs” group, which will lead the company’s artificial intelligence initiatives.
Alexandr Wang, the former Scale AI CEO who joined Meta as part of a multibillion-dollar transaction earlier this month, will serve as chief AI officer and lead the group. Bloomberg notes that former GitHub CEO Nat Friedman will collaborate closely with Wang in leading the division. Additionally, Meta has brought on 11 new employees focused on AI, including former staff from Anthropic, Google DeepMind, and OpenAI.
To strengthen its AI capabilities—which have lagged behind other leading AI firms—Zuckerberg has reportedly extended massive offers to potential new hires. The Verge’s Alex Heath indicated the offers reach “well into the eight-figure range.” Heath also reported that Meta held acquisition discussions with companies such as Mira Murati’s Thinking Machines Lab, Perplexity, and Ilya Sutskever’s Safe Superintelligence, though “none of these talks reached the formal offer stage for various reasons.”
In the memo, which CNBC published in full, Zuckerberg stated that Meta also intends to “begin research on our next generation of models to reach the frontier within the next year or so.”
