Jony Ive's New Project Confronts iPhone's Unintended Consequences

Former Apple designer Jony Ive reveals that his current product development is motivated by addressing the "unintended consequences" linked to the iPhone. In a conversation with Stripe, Ive noted that nothing preoccupies or troubles him more than the potential negative impact of smartphones on users.
"Innovation inevitably brings unintended outcomes," Ive remarked. "You aim for most to be pleasant surprises. With some products I was deeply involved in, however, certain unintended effects were far from positive."
Ive dedicated over twenty years to Apple, overseeing the design of iconic devices like the iPhone, iPad, Mac, Apple Watch, and iPod. He departed the company in 2019 to co-found the design agency LoveFrom. Last year, Ive confirmed his collaboration with OpenAI on a new device, a project he subtly referenced during this discussion.
"Even with pure intentions, if something you create leads to negative repercussions, you must take responsibility," Ive stated. "That sense of ownership has profoundly influenced my recent work—details I can't share yet but hope to unveil in the future."
Discussing artificial intelligence, Ive expressed encouragement that "conversations about AI rarely occur without appropriate safety considerations." He contrasted this with his "extreme concerns about social media, which initially sparked no meaningful dialogue."
While specifics about Ive's OpenAI project remain scarce, The New York Times reported that LoveFrom is heading the device's design with Tang Tan and Evans Hankey, both instrumental in iPhone development. Ive and OpenAI CEO Sam Altman have reportedly explored how AI enables novel hardware creation, as "the technology offers users capabilities beyond traditional software."
