JD.com has officially rolled out an AI-powered smart helmet for its delivery fleet, initially distributing the device to full-time riders before expanding availability to all couriers. The innovative helmet features an integrated AI voice assistant, pre-loaded "Single King Route" navigation, and automated order note interpretation to alert riders of specific delivery instructions in advance.
Key Use Cases: Hands-Free Operation in Rain, Navigation Through Complex Residential Areas, and Automated Note Recognition
The AI smart helmet targets three primary challenges faced by delivery couriers. To address the difficulty of handling phones in rainy conditions, the device enables full voice interaction, allowing riders to accept orders or contact customers hands-free while keeping both hands on the handlebars. For couriers like Beijing-based rider Xiao Zhang, who struggle with "labyrinthine" residential complexes where building numbers are obscured by foliage and entrances are difficult to locate, the helmet’s "Single King Route" feature digitizes the experience of veteran riders. By embedding this "living map" into the algorithm, the system provides precise audio directions, such as "Proceed straight from the south gate, turn left at the white statue, and the second building is your destination."
Furthermore, the helmet automatically interprets order notes. For instance, Shanghai-based courier Li Jie often receives orders with instructions like "Child is sleeping, please leave at the door," but worries these details might be overlooked. The AI helmet proactively alerts riders to review these notes before delivery, ensuring no specific instructions are missed. Additionally, the device includes a "Merchant Environment Verification" tool, helping couriers assess store conditions during pickup and automatically flagging any issues.
