iOS 27 May Support Custom Third-Party AI Models, Ending Single Dominance

Apple is moving swiftly to dismantle the walls around its AI ecosystem. According to the latest industry reports, the company plans to introduce a major change in iOS 27, iPadOS 27, and macOS 27, all set for release this fall: users will be able to choose third-party AI models to power their device's smart features based on personal preference.
Dubbed "Extensions," this feature will let users tap into alternative AI providers when generating or editing text, or creating images—rather than being limited to the system's default options. Through the settings menu, they can switch Apple Intelligence's underlying support to other installed AI services, such as Google's Gemini or Anthropic's Claude.
Apple has already tested these third-party models internally. To support this shift, the App Store is expected to create a dedicated section for compatible AI applications. Additionally, to help users clearly identify the source of a service, Apple plans to introduce new voice options for Siri, providing distinct audio cues when different external models are in use.
Since Apple Intelligence launched in 2024, OpenAI's ChatGPT has been its only third-party partner. However, reports indicate that ChatGPT's actual usage on Apple devices has fallen short of expectations. Moreover, with OpenAI frequently recruiting Apple engineers to develop hardware, the relationship between the two companies is subtly shifting toward competition.
Beyond opening up model selection, iOS 27 is expected to bring a more "independent" upgraded version of Siri. The new system is rumored to integrate Siri deeply into the Camera app, enabling intelligent recognition and recording of food labels, business cards, and event tickets. AI editing tools in the Photos app and the customizable credentials feature in the Wallet app will also receive upgrades.
Although Apple will continue promoting its own models and will prominently remind users that it is not responsible for third-party responses, this move gives users greater flexibility and signals that mobile AI competition is entering a new era where multiple models coexist.
