Independent Music Publishers Sue Anthropic and Suno Over AI Copyright, Seeking Over $1 Billion
AI-related copyright litigation is resurfacing with renewed intensity. Round Hill Music, an independent music publisher, has initiated legal proceedings in a California federal court against AI powerhouses Anthropic and Suno. The lawsuit alleges that both entities utilized hundreds of copyrighted tracks without authorization to train their generative models.
Legal filings indicate that Anthropic incorporated at least 500 classic song lyrics from Round Hill’s catalog into the training data for its chatbot, Claude. This included works by renowned artists such as James Brown, The Kinks, and Goo Goo Dolls, aimed at enhancing the model’s ability to process and respond to user prompts. Concurrently, Round Hill leveled similar accusations against Suno, asserting that its AI music generation platform also improperly leveraged this copyrighted library for training purposes.
As the infringement controversy intensifies, the publisher has disclosed that ongoing investigations and evidence gathering suggest the scope of affected songs could expand to tens of thousands. Given this extensive scale of alleged infringement, the plaintiff is demanding compensation nearing or exceeding $1 billion. To date, neither Anthropic nor Suno has issued an official public response to the lawsuit.
