Huawei's HarmonyOS 6 AI Agents Challenge Android and iOS Dominance
The latest stage of the mobile OS competition has shifted from app stores and interfaces to a focus on artificial intelligence. Huawei's newest offering, HarmonyOS 6, introduces AI agents not as mere features but as the fundamental architecture powering user interactions.
The beta release for developers highlights a larger industry trend, where operating systems evolve from passive platforms into intelligent intermediaries that proactively learn, anticipate, and act for users.
A fundamental shift to an AI-first system
The core innovation of HarmonyOS 6 is its AI Agent Framework, which enables developers to build automated programs without the need to create or train foundational AI models from the ground up.
This framework aims to simplify AI development within the Huawei ecosystem, making it more accessible.
Richard Yu, Chairman of Huawei's Consumer Business Group, announced that over 50 AI agents from major Chinese platforms like Weibo and Ximalaya will be available at the consumer launch of HarmonyOS 6.
However, a public release date was not specified during his presentation at a developer conference on Friday.
This integration advances an industry-wide shift where operating systems are becoming platforms for AI deployment, rather than just application launchers. By embedding AI capabilities directly into the OS, Huawei positions HarmonyOS 6 as the foundation for what it calls a next-generation computing experience.
Steady growth shown by ecosystem metrics
The platform now boasts eight million registered developers and hosts over 30,000 applications and "atomic services"—lightweight programs that run without installation. HarmonyOS 5 is active on more than 40 device models, signaling consistent hardware adoption.
Yu acknowledged the competitive landscape, noting that HarmonyOS still trails Apple's iOS and Google's Android in terms of global reach and app availability.
He pointed out, however, that "the top 5,000 apps accounted for 99.9 percent of consumer time" on Huawei devices, indicating a strategy focused on essential, high-engagement applications rather than sheer quantity.
This pragmatic approach reflects Huawei's understanding that ecosystem success hinges on quality and user engagement over raw numbers. Prioritizing core applications that drive user behavior demonstrates a mature strategy to compete with established rivals.
Pangu AI models focus on industrial use cases
Huawei has also unveiled Pangu 5.5, the latest iteration in its suite of AI models designed for enterprise and industrial applications. The natural language processing model contains 718 billion parameters, while the computer vision model features 15 billion parameters—specifications that make them competitive in today's AI market.
The company is targeting five key sectors: healthcare, finance, government, manufacturing, and automotive. This industrial focus suggests Huawei is leveraging AI development to strengthen enterprise partnerships, especially as its access to consumer markets faces geopolitical constraints.
The integration of these AI models with HarmonyOS 6 creates a vertically integrated technology stack. By controlling both the AI infrastructure and the operating system, Huawei can potentially offer better optimization and performance.
Market momentum and strategic outlook
According to research firm Canalys, Huawei has shipped over 103 million smartphones and 21 million tablets running HarmonyOS, with nearly half of those shipments occurring in 2024. This acceleration points to growing adoption and suggests the platform is gaining significant traction within China's domestic market.
The company is expanding HarmonyOS beyond mobile, having launched two laptops with the operating system last month. This multi-device strategy aims to create a unified software experience akin to Apple's ecosystem, though executing it across diverse hardware categories presents considerable technical challenges.
The development of HarmonyOS 6 is part of Huawei's broader transition from a hardware-centric company to a provider of software and services. This evolution, driven by restrictions such as the US Entity List since 2019, has compelled innovative approaches to both technology development and market strategy.

HarmonyOS 6のAIエージェント、AndroidやiOSを脅かす存在になるのか?アプリストア競争からAI基盤へシフトする流れは興味深い。Huaweiの戦略がどう展開するか、今後の動向を見守りたい。🤖✨
