Harvard psychologist Pike: Focus on AI safety engineering, not doomsday rumors

Harvard psychologist Steven Pinker argues that fears of AI causing human extinction are vastly overstated, a position he detailed in an open letter to Quillette addressed to Scott Alexander.
After Alexander challenged Pinker to a public debate on AI survival risks, Pinker refused, dismissing the exchange as mere entertainment. He specifically rejects the "paperclip maximizer" thought experiment, arguing it wrongly equates intelligence with aggression and ignores the likelihood of systems going out of control.
The Real Risks Are Often Overlooked
While Pinker previously viewed AI optimistically, he admits to two miscalculations: underestimating the power of large language models and failing to predict how quickly companies would deploy them. Ironically, many of those warning about these risks come from groups that previously dismissed such concerns.
Pinker identifies bio-terrorism, cyberattacks, and unregulated AI agents as genuine threats. He argues that focusing on extinction scenarios distracts from practical solutions like robust security engineering, independent oversight, accountability frameworks, and maintaining human control.
