GPT-4.1 Unveiled: Exclusive Access Details Revealed
Last week, the tech world was buzzing with excitement after OpenAI CEO Sam Altman hinted at a new feature release. Many thought it was the much-anticipated GPT-4.1 model, but it turned out to be a significant update to ChatGPT with new memory capabilities. However, the wait for the new models is finally over.
New Family of Models - Tailored for Developers
On Monday, OpenAI took to a livestream to introduce their latest innovation: a new family of models named GPT-4.1, GPT-4.1 mini, and GPT-4.1 nano. These models have been designed to boost performance in coding, instruction-following, and understanding long contexts, surpassing the capabilities of their predecessors, GPT-4o and GPT-4o mini, in every aspect.
Exclusively crafted for developers, these models are accessible only through the API. OpenAI has incorporated developer feedback to refine these models, focusing on areas like maintaining reliable formats, sticking to response structures, and enhancing front-end coding. In their teaser X post, OpenAI described the models as addressing developers' "supermassive black hole."
One of the standout features of the GPT-4.1 models is their reduced latency, which means less lag, while still excelling in intelligence evaluations such as the Multilingual (MMLU) benchmark:

Despite their high performance, these models are also cost-effective, tackling a significant concern for developers. OpenAI revealed that GPT-4.1 is 26% less expensive than GPT-4o for median queries, and it's the fastest and most affordable model the company has ever released. Additionally, GPT-4.1 mini slashes costs by an impressive 83%.
The models also boast larger context windows, capable of processing up to one million tokens. For context, the o1 and o3-mini models in the API have a 200K context length, while GPT-4.5 and GPT-4o have a 128K context length.
OpenAI highlighted that the enhanced long-context comprehension and improved instruction-following make the GPT-4.1 models "more effective" for powering AI agents, the next big thing in AI. AI agents are systems that can independently perform tasks without needing step-by-step guidance.
To dive deeper into how these new models stack up against the older ones across various benchmarks and use cases, check out OpenAI's detailed blog post.
Given their superior performance at a lower cost compared to GPT-4.5, OpenAI has decided to phase out GPT-4.5 and shift focus to future developments. Developers have until July 14, 2025, to transition, as the GPT-4.5 Preview will be discontinued on that date.
Not a Developer? No Worries, Try GPT-4o
If you're not a developer but a regular ChatGPT user, don't feel left out. While the new GPT-4.1 models won't be available in the ChatGPT model picker, the latest version of GPT-4o in the chatbot incorporates many of the same enhancements, as detailed in the changelog for the March 27 update.

Finally! I've been waiting forever for this update. The memory feature is cool, but honestly, I'm more interested in what GPT-4.1 could do. Fingers crossed it's a real game-changer for complex creative tasks! 🤞
Wow, memory capabilities in ChatGPT sound cool, but I'm still hyped for GPT-4.1. When’s it dropping? 🤔
