Google's Gemini AI to Enhance Apple Services Including Siri

It's now official: Apple has entered a partnership with Google, a long-term collaborator, to enhance AI functionalities such as Siri.
"Following thorough evaluation, we concluded that Google's technology offers the most advanced foundation for Apple's foundational models. We are enthusiastic about the innovative experiences this will create for our users," stated Apple and Google.
This announcement confirms earlier reports of a deal between the two companies. While neither Apple nor Google has disclosed the financial terms, prior reports suggest Apple may pay Google approximately $1 billion for access to its AI technology. The agreement follows a period where Apple tested competing AI systems from companies like OpenAI and Anthropic.
This multi-year collaboration will see Apple utilizing Google's Gemini models and cloud infrastructure for its future foundational AI models. According to a source familiar with the agreement, the deal is not exclusive. Apple has traditionally prioritized vertical integration, developing its own hardware and software.
The iPhone maker has faced public scrutiny as its AI initiatives, particularly the Siri assistant, have been perceived as lagging behind rivals. This is not to say Apple hasn't been developing robust foundational models behind the scenes. The company launched the first iteration of "Apple Intelligence" in 2024, integrating AI into core operating system features like photo search and notification summaries. Privacy has been a cornerstone of Apple's AI rollout, with most processing occurring on-device or within secure, controlled infrastructure. Apple has committed to upholding these privacy standards throughout its partnership with Google.
This approach has resulted in a more subtle, often integrated—and sometimes underappreciated—form of AI, which lacks the immediate "wow factor" of standalone products like ChatGPT or Gemini. It also has not yet delivered the comprehensive Siri overhaul that many users have anticipated.
While Apple has postponed the launch of its "more personalized Siri" voice assistant multiple times, a company spokesperson confirmed to TechCrunch that an upgrade is scheduled for this year. Previous reporting indicates the revamped Siri is expected to debut in the spring.

Apple's new partnership with Google is unfolding as the search and advertising giant faces several major antitrust lawsuits, one of which directly scrutinizes its relationship with Apple. In August 2024, a federal judge ruled that Google maintained an illegal search monopoly by paying companies, including Apple, to set its search engine as the default on devices and browsers. Reports indicate Google paid Apple roughly $38 billion between 2021 and 2022 for these default placements.
In December 2025, Judge Amit Mehta issued the final remedies for the case, which include prohibiting Google from establishing exclusive default agreements like its past deal with Apple, "unless the agreement terminates no more than one year after it is signed."
