Google's Gemini App Set for Major Overhaul

Following the success of OpenAI's video editing app Sora, now leading the U.S. App Store, Google may be planning a more visually-driven update for its Gemini AI app. The company appears to be testing a new interface that transforms the app from a standard chatbot layout into a scrollable feed filled with suggested prompts and engaging images.

These changes were identified in a recent version of the Gemini Android app by Android Authority but are not yet publicly available. A reverse engineer activated the new home screen by examining the app's code, where shortcut buttons for functions like "Create Image" or "Deep Research" were repositioned higher on the screen, followed by the scrollable feed.

When asked for comment, a Google spokesperson stated there is no announcement to share "just yet."

In the examples provided, prompts included creative ideas for photo editing, such as "Teleport me to deep space," "Give me a vintage or grunge look," or "Turn my drawing into a storybook." Other prompts with vibrant backgrounds offered various ways to interact with Gemini, like "Brainstorm out loud with Live," or "Send me a daily news roundup."

The goal is to inspire users with specific suggestions on how to leverage Gemini's AI capabilities, rather than leaving them to explore the chatbot's features on their own. This redesign would also make the Gemini app more visually attractive and engaging.

If released to the public, this update could help Google better compete with rival OpenAI, whose ChatGPT app remains quite minimalist with a largely blank startup screen. Additionally, it could tap into consumer interest in Google's newer AI image model, Nano Banana, which helped the Gemini app rise to the top of the App Store charts in September; it became the number one app on September 12 and maintained that position until being overtaken by Sora.
