Google's AI Overviews Expand to Gmail for Work

At its Google Cloud Next conference on Wednesday, the company unveiled a series of updates centered on Workspace, including bringing its AI Overviews feature to Gmail. This tool, which currently uses AI to summarize Google Search results, will now perform the same function for workplace Gmail users.
Google states this will enable Gmail users to ask questions in search using natural language and receive concise answers without needing to open and read individual emails.
The company suggests the feature could be used to ask business-related questions about topics commonly shared via email, such as performance updates, project milestones, invoices, presentation feedback, travel details, and more, providing straightforward responses.
The AI Overview will generate an instant summary drawn from multiple emails and conversations.
Although not everyone prefers using AI as their first step to find information, it is quickly becoming standard practice, both within Google's ecosystem and across the wider web.
In this instance, Google notes that AI Overviews in Gmail will be enabled by default for organizations with Gemini for Workspace activated in Gmail and with Workspace Intelligence access to Gmail turned on. End users must also have "Smart features in Gmail, Chat, and Meet" and "Google Workspace smart features" enabled.
The feature was previously available to consumers with Google AI Pro and Ultra subscriptions. Google now confirms it will also roll out to business, enterprise, and education customers through the following products:
Alongside this launch, Google announced it is making AI Overviews in Drive widely available to eligible Workspace and Google AI plans, moving it out of its previous beta phase.
