Honor Integrates Google’s AI Image-to-Video Generator in Latest Smartphones
Honor Beats Google to Market With Exclusive AI Video Generator
Chinese smartphone maker Honor has unveiled an innovative image-to-video AI tool powered by Google's technology, launching it ahead of Google's own Gemini users. This new feature will debut exclusively for Honor 400 and 400 Pro buyers when these devices hit stores on May 22nd.
The AI-powered functionality, which utilizes Google's cutting-edge Veo 2 model, transforms static photos into five-second video clips in either portrait or landscape orientation. Each conversion takes approximately 1-2 minutes to process. Integrated seamlessly into the Gallery app on Honor's new devices, the tool maintains simplicity - users upload an image without text prompts, trusting the AI's interpretation.

Left: Original concert photo. Right: AI's interpretation of musician Grant Nicholas in motion. The results demonstrate promising capabilities alongside amusing quirks. The AI handles straightforward subjects like portraits effectively, producing convincing movement - though with occasional anatomical exaggerations (my cat Noodle's tongue appeared unnaturally large). More complex images reveal current limitations: vintage cars rotated impossibly, tomatoes mysteriously handled by invisible fingers, and soccer matches ballooned to 27 players across three teams with dual referees. One particularly surreal moment occurred when processing Van Gogh's self-portrait - the AI envisioned a pigeon emerging from the artist's eye.

Technical note: Original MP4 videos converted to GIFs may show slight quality reduction.
Accessibility and Pricing Structure
Honor will provide this AI feature complimentary for the first two months to Honor 400 series owners, implementing a daily cap of 10 video generations. Honor's UK marketing lead Chris Langley confirmed future Google-powered access will transition to a subscription model, though specifics remain undisclosed.
Google currently offers Veo 2 video generation exclusively through text prompts in its premium Gemini Advanced tier. Google Cloud lists image-to-video conversion as a Veo 2 capability priced at $0.50 per second of output, though presently restricted to "approved users" only.

That's a smart move by Honor, beating Google to market with their own tech. Kind of ironic, but shows how quickly competition shapes AI in consumer devices. Curious to see how Gemini users react when they finally get it - maybe the delay leads to a better version? 🤔 Also, makes you wonder about the licensing deal details and who really benefits long-term.
