When it comes to creating compelling personal AI agents, Google might have a hidden advantage: it already holds all your emails.
On Tuesday at its Google I/O developer conference, the company unveiled a new agentic personal assistant named Gemini Spark, built on Gemini base models and an agentic harness from Google Antigravity.
Alphabet CEO Sundar Pichai described Spark as the next evolution of smart digital assistants, harnessing agentic AI to handle long-term tasks with minimal supervision.
Pichai told reporters during a product pre-briefing, “It’s your personal AI agent that helps you navigate your digital life, acting on your behalf and under your direction. It runs seamlessly on dedicated virtual machines on Google Cloud, so you don’t need to keep your laptop open to ensure it’s running.”
Spark joins a wave of popular agentic products from major AI labs, most notably Anthropic’s Claude Cowork and OpenAI’s ChatGPT agent, but it stands out due to its deep integration with Google’s broader product suite. It includes out-of-the-box integrations with Gmail, Google Docs, and other Google Workspace tools, sparing users the hassle of configuring connections and permissions with external apps.
Users can email Spark directly via a dedicated Gmail address, and the agent can interact with the web directly through Chrome. On mobile, you can also monitor the agent's progress through the new Android Halo system.
Google Labs’ Josh Woodward, VP of the Gemini App and AI Studio, said, “Need to send a status update email to your boss? Spark can pull all the relevant facts from your emails, docs, sheets, and slides and draft it for you. Small businesses are already using Spark to monitor their inbox and ensure they never miss a customer question.”
Like other agentic assistants, Spark can be integrated into a wide range of services via MCP, and Google plans to roll out more connections in the coming months.
Spark is currently being tested at Google; the company expects to release it to Google AI Ultra subscribers next week.
