Google Unveils Coral Edge AI Board for Local Gemma3 Inference

At the 2026 Google I/O event, Google unveiled the Coral Board, a compact single-board computer engineered for edge AI. This device tackles the industry’s challenge of fragmented AI accelerators by integrating Google Research’s open-source Coral NPU, built on RISC-V architecture, and powered by the Synaptics Astra SL2619 chip.
Hardware specifications include a 2GHz dual-core processor and 2GB of memory, delivering 1 TOPS of local computing power. The board is specifically optimized for low-power, compact devices like earbuds, AR glasses, and smartwatches.
Through vertical hardware optimization, Google’s lightweight open-source language model, Gemma 3270M, runs entirely offline on the Coral Board without cloud dependency. Demonstrations at the conference included real-time translation, voice control, and generative AI that tracks jellyfish using YOLOv8 and converts their movement into music.
