Google is set to invest $10 billion in AI firm Anthropic, with the potential for an additional $30 billion in the future to deepen their partnership. This investment values Anthropic at $35 billion, matching its valuation from a funding round this past February.
Earlier this year, Anthropic secured $3 billion in a February funding round. It also recently obtained a $5 billion investment from Amazon at the same $35 billion valuation, with a potential future top-up of $2 billion. The company has gained significant traction, particularly for its AI coding assistant Claude Code, which boosts software development efficiency and has become a favorite tool among engineers in Silicon Valley.
As part of the deal, Google will supply Anthropic with 5 gigawatts of computing capacity over the next five years, along with up to 1 million TPU chips to scale its computational resources. TPUs are high-performance processors developed by Google and are extensively used in the AI sector. Google had previously invested roughly $3 billion in Anthropic, making this new commitment a major step in strengthening their strategic alliance.
Despite the close ties, Google executives are reportedly wary of Anthropic's swift ascent in the AI coding market. The two companies could become competitors in the race to develop human-level AI capabilities. Furthermore, Anthropic is navigating several challenges, including legal issues stemming from a U.S. Department of Defense designation as a "supply chain risk," as well as external scrutiny of its investment and computing power agreements with major tech firms.
To support its expanding product roadmap, Anthropic is actively exploring an initial public offering (IPO) as soon as October this year.
