Google has stepped up its push into the desktop AI space by quietly launching an early beta test of a native Gemini app for macOS. This move marks deep integration of Google's AI models into Apple's desktop operating system, following the web version, and directly challenges rivals like ChatGPT and Claude, which already have Mac desktop apps. According to reports, the test is currently limited to invited users to collect early feedback.
According to the app's code, the macOS version of Gemini will include a key feature called "Desktop Intelligence." This feature is designed to let Gemini deeply understand the context of desktop applications and screen content, potentially offering a screen-sharing mode similar to the Android Gemini Live, enabling users to interact with the AI based on what's currently on their screen.
Testers have already tried creating multimedia content using models like Nano Banana, Veo, and Lyria. As a native app, Gemini will also be able to draw on knowledge from past conversations, understand context, and access web search results.
While Mac and Windows users still need to use progressive web apps (PWAs) to access Gemini, the development of a native app signals Google's effort to deliver a more deeply optimized desktop AI experience, rather than just a web replica.
This initiative not only fills a gap in Gemini's native desktop offerings but also speeds the shift of generative AI from mobile to desktop office ecosystems through differentiated features like screen awareness. Google has not yet announced a specific release date for the macOS Gemini, but as testing progresses, desktop AI competition is set to heat up.
