Google Search extends Gemini's Canvas in AI Mode to all U.S. users.
Google has made Canvas in AI Mode available to all users in the United States who use English, following the feature's initial rollout as a Google Labs experiment last year.
Designed to assist with project organization, planning, and in-depth research, Canvas in AI Mode now lets users draft documents or build custom tools directly within Google Search, according to a company blog post.
Google has previously highlighted uses like creating study guides by uploading class notes. The tool can also convert a research report into a webpage, quiz, or audio summary, offering some functionality similar to Google's Notebook LM.

Users can describe a concept to Canvas, and it will generate the code to turn that idea into a shareable app or game. It's also useful for polishing creative writing drafts and soliciting feedback on projects.
Canvas is already accessible within Gemini, where Google AI Pro and AI Ultra subscribers get the latest Gemini 3 model and a 1 million-token context window for handling complex tasks.
With its integration into Google's AI Mode search feature, Canvas now reaches a wider U.S. audience, including those unfamiliar with Gemini. This showcases Google's strategic advantage in AI: the massive reach of Google Search lets it introduce products to billions of users.

To access Canvas, users in AI Mode select the new Canvas option from the tool menu (+), then describe their creation. This opens a side panel where they can gather information from the web and Google's Knowledge Graph. When building a prototype, users can test it, view the underlying code, and refine the app by chatting with Gemini.
Canvas enters a space with similar tools from OpenAI and Anthropic. While ChatGPT's canvas feature activates automatically based on the query, Google's and Claude's versions require more direct user initiation. Both competitors also offer assistance with writing and project development.
