Google now directs complex search queries in its AI Overviews to its most advanced model, Gemini 3 Pro, while relying on faster models for simpler searches.
The intelligent routing system, initially launched in AI Mode last year, now applies to the AI-generated summaries that appear directly beneath search queries for two billion monthly users. This upgrade is available worldwide in English, but exclusively for subscribers of Google AI Pro ($19.99/month) or AI Ultra.
“In the background, Search will automatically route your most challenging questions to our cutting-edge model, while still using faster models for routine tasks,” explained Robby Stein, Vice President of Product for Google Search, in the announcement.
Subscribers Get Priority Access to Advanced Reasoning
This staged rollout reflects Google’s ongoing approach of reserving its most powerful AI features for paying customers. While Gemini 3 Flash currently drives the standard AI Mode experience for all users, tapping into Gemini 3 Pro’s superior reasoning abilities requires a subscription.
Google AI Pro subscribers are allotted 100 Gemini 3 Pro prompts daily, while AI Ultra users receive 500. The company recently raised these limits—AI Pro’s “Thinking” mode quota increased from 100 to 300 daily prompts—indicating strong subscriber interest in the more advanced model.
This distinction is important, as Gemini 3 Pro offers a substantial capability advantage over Flash. Google describes it as “exceptionally skilled at solving complex problems across diverse fields like science and mathematics with high reliability,” featuring a 1-million-token context window capable of processing approximately 1,500 pages of text.
For intricate queries demanding multi-step reasoning or subtle interpretation, Pro’s deeper analytical capacity could significantly enhance answer quality. However, the subscription barrier means the majority of AI Overviews’ two billion monthly users won’t benefit from these improvements—they’ll continue receiving responses from the quicker, less sophisticated models.

Query Fan-Out Drives the System
The routing intelligence depends on what Stein has previously referred to as “query fan-out”—a method where the AI model utilizes Google Search as a tool to execute additional queries, collecting more relevant information before compiling a response.
This technique differs from basic retrieval-augmented generation. Instead of drawing from a static collection of indexed documents, the system dynamically broadens its search according to the question’s complexity and nature, potentially yielding more thorough and precise answers.
Google has been rapidly expanding Gemini’s integration across its product ecosystem. The same week as the AI Overviews enhancement, the company introduced Gemini AI to Gmail, offering summaries and smart replies, and had previously launched Personal Intelligence features that link Gemini to users’ personal data throughout Google services.
The company announced that the Gemini app now boasts over 650 million monthly users, more than 70% of Google Cloud customers utilize Google AI, and 13 million developers have created applications using its generative models.
The Subscription Dilemma
Google’s choice to restrict enhanced AI Overviews to subscribers prompts questions about the future of search. The company established its dominance by offering free access to global information; now its top-tier AI-powered search comes with a $20 monthly fee.
The competitive reasoning is evident. OpenAI’s ChatGPT search, Perplexity, and other AI search platforms are all competing for users seeking AI-driven answers. Google cannot afford to lag in capability, yet providing its most costly models for free would severely impact profitability.
Currently, the solution is a dual-tier system: all users receive AI Overviews powered by rapid, efficient models, while subscribers gain access to advanced reasoning for difficult questions. Whether this structure will persist as AI search competition heats up—or whether Google will eventually move more features behind the paywall—remains uncertain.
This upgrade comes just days after Google removed AI Overviews from specific medical queries following a misinformation incident, underscoring that more powerful models don’t necessarily guarantee more reliable answers. As Google directs complex queries to its most capable AI, the importance of delivering accurate responses grows even greater.
