Google announced on Thursday that it's introducing AI Mode, a conversational search feature that lets you explore the web in a new way. When using AI Mode on Chrome desktop, clicking a link now opens the webpage alongside AI Mode, allowing side-by-side browsing.
The tech giant says the goal is to make it easier to browse relevant websites, compare details, and ask follow-up questions while keeping your search context intact.
For example, if you're shopping for a new coffee maker, you can describe your preferences in AI Mode and receive a list of options. Clicking on one opens the retailer's website next to AI Mode, where you can ask specific questions like "How easy is this to clean?" AI Mode then uses context from the page and the broader web to provide answers.

"Our early testers appreciated not having to constantly switch tabs to get help with a long article or video," Google said in a blog post. "They also found that having Search and the web side-by-side helped them stay focused while exploring useful pages."
Google also introduced a new feature that lets you search across your currently open Chrome tabs.
On Chrome desktop or mobile, you can tap the new "plus" menu in the search box on the New Tab page or within AI Mode, then select recent tabs to include in your search. This lets you combine multiple tabs, images, or files and bring that context into your AI Mode queries.
For instance, if you're researching local hiking trails with a few tabs already open, you can add them to your search and ask about similar trails in another location. Or, while studying for a statistics exam, you can pull context from open tabs, class notes, lecture slides, and more to request examples that illustrate a concept.
The new AI Mode updates are now available in the U.S. in English. Google plans to roll them out to more regions in the future.
