Google rolls out NotebookLM Plus to individual users

Google has rolled out NotebookLM Plus, the premium version of its AI-powered note-taking and research tool, to individual users who are part of the Google One AI Premium plan. This move comes nearly two months after its initial release to businesses through Google Cloud and Google Workspace.

NotebookLM Plus, first revealed in December following a pilot program, boasts enhanced limits and features. Users get five times the capacity of the free version, with access to 500 notebooks, 300 sources per notebook, up to 500 chat queries, and 20 audio generations daily.

Subscribers to the Google One AI Premium plan, priced at $20 monthly, can now tap into these benefits. Google's also offering a sweet deal for U.S. students over 18, slashing the cost to $9.99 a month—a 50% discount.

"We've been eager to extend NotebookLM Plus to both enterprises and individual users, and we've seen a huge demand, especially from students," Kelly Schaefer, Google Labs' director of product and domain lead, shared in an interview.

Since its launch in 2023, NotebookLM has caught more eyes, particularly after introducing Audio Overviews in September last year. This feature lets users create podcast-style audio chats from their uploaded content, inspiring companies like ElevenLabs and Meta to follow suit.

Google keeps NotebookLM fresh with regular updates, including enhancements to AI-generated audio conversations. Schaefer mentioned to TechCrunch that they're planning to expand Audio Overviews to languages other than English.

"We're figuring out which languages to prioritize and how to ensure they sound as genuine and smooth as our English Audio Overviews," she explained.

While Schaefer didn't spill the beans on which Gemini AI models power NotebookLM, she confirmed that both Plus and free users currently use the same underlying model. Google Labs tweaks different Gemini variants and always picks "the latest and best matching Gemini models for the specific task at hand," she added.

They're also developing a mobile app for NotebookLM, though Schaefer didn't give a timeline. "We want the mobile experience to echo the desktop version but also cater to what mobile users typically need," she said.

The team's also looking into how NotebookLM can use emerging reasoning models to enhance thinking and reasoning experiences.

Even as NotebookLM Plus expands to individual Google One AI Premium subscribers, which includes access to Gemini Advanced, Gemini in Gmail and Docs, and 2TB of cloud storage, Schaefer emphasized their commitment to supporting non-paying users.

"We want everyone to have a great experience with NotebookLM, whether they're paying or not. It's crucial that the free version remains excellent. We're focusing on adding more value for Plus users without diminishing the free experience," she stated.

Google hasn't shared specific user numbers or team size for NotebookLM, only noting growth over time. However, Similarweb data indicates the AI assistant has attracted 28.18 million visits in the last three months, with nearly 9 million in January alone.

NotebookLM Plus is a lifesaver for my research! It's so easy to organize notes and find what I need quickly. But the price? Ouch! It's a bit steep for individual users. Still, if you can afford it, it's definitely worth the investment. Just wish it was a bit cheaper!

NotebookLM Plus

NotebookLM Plus
