Google deploys AI tools in Chrome to shield users from scams.
Google has announced new AI-powered security updates for Chrome to help fight online scams. The company is rolling out its on-device large language model, Gemini Nano, for desktop users to offer enhanced protection. Additionally, Chrome on Android will receive new AI-driven alerts to warn users about potentially spammy web notifications.
Google states that Chrome's Enhanced Safe Browsing mode provides its strongest level of security, blocking phishing and online threats twice as effectively as the standard protection setting. With Gemini Nano, users with Enhanced Protection will gain an extra layer of defense against evolving scams.
This on-device analysis allows Chrome to instantly identify suspicious websites, including new and previously unknown scam pages.
"Gemini Nano is ideal for this task because it can process the complex and varied content of websites, helping us respond faster to emerging scam techniques," Google explained in a blog post.
The AI system is already being used to protect users from fake tech support scams. Google plans to extend this protection to Android devices and target more scam types in the coming months.

To combat this, Chrome for Android will now use on-device AI to detect and alert users about spammy, misleading, or harmful notifications.
When Chrome's machine learning model identifies a potentially risky notification, it will display a warning. Users can then choose to block the notification, view the blocked content, or, if they believe the warning is incorrect, allow future notifications from that website.
