Google Responds to U.S. AI Action Plan

AI isn't just a technological marvel—it's revolutionizing the very way we push the boundaries of innovation. We're already witnessing AI's impact on healthcare, speeding up scientific breakthroughs, and boosting our economy in exciting ways.

But it's on us to grab this chance with both hands. To do that, we need solid policy frameworks that'll keep America at the forefront of AI and usher in a new wave of possibilities.

We've put forward some thoughts in our response to the Office of Science and Technology Policy's Request for Information.

Our response zeroes in on three crucial areas:

  1. Invest in AI. Governments at all levels need to team up on policy tweaks to handle the skyrocketing energy demands that come with expanding AI infrastructure. We're also talking about export controls that safeguard our national security while letting America share and sell AI services abroad. Our scientists need those computational resources for research, so we're looking at new partnerships with national labs. And, the feds should adopt policies that keep data accessible for fair learning, use a risk-based approach to AI applications under existing rules, and head off a confusing mess of state-level regulations on cutting-edge AI development.

  2. Speed up and modernize government AI use. The government should show the way in adopting and rolling out AI. We're thinking multi-vendor, interoperable AI solutions and smoother procurement for AI and other new tech.

  3. Push for pro-innovation policies worldwide. The feds should lead the charge for market-driven, widely accepted technical standards, building on the Commerce Department's work with the International Standards Organization and others. Together with industry and like-minded countries, we should set up protocols and benchmarks to manage the risks of frontier AI systems. Plus, the Administration can back American AI leadership by tackling restrictive AI barriers abroad.

As Vice President Vance put it in Paris earlier this year, we've got a shot at "catching lightning in a bottle." AI offers us a chance to make life better for folks everywhere—and it's our duty to make the most of it.

Let's be clear: The policies we choose will steer the course of the global AI race. A forward-thinking approach that keeps our national security in check and spreads the benefits far and wide will help us tap into AI's game-changing potential and keep America's lead strong. Google's all in on this, ready to work with the federal government to make the AI Action Plan a success.

AI's potential is wild, but Google’s response feels like a cautious sidestep. Are they ready to lead or just playing catch-up? 🤔 Exciting times, but I’m curious how they’ll balance innovation with ethics.
