Google Renames NotebookLM to Gemini, Equipping It With a Cloud Computer Capable of Writing and Running Code
Longtime NotebookLM users should prepare for a familiar face with a new identity. On the 16th, Google announced that its AI note-taking assistant, NotebookLM, has been officially rebranded as Gemini Notebook, marking its full integration into Google’s unified AI ecosystem. While the name has shifted, the product’s core identity remains intact. Google confirmed that it continues to operate as an independent tool, yet it will now play a pivotal role across the broader Google platform, including integration with the Gemini app and Google Search.

The true value of this rebranding lies in the underlying capability upgrades. Gemini Notebook users will progressively gain access to a critical feature: secure cloud computing integration. This enhancement effectively equips the notebook with a powerful processing engine, enabling native code generation and execution. Users can now perform complex data analysis directly on their own sources without needing to export data to external tools. The notebook has evolved from a simple repository for information into an active workspace capable of generating real-time computational results.
This update is initially available to Google AI Ultra subscribers, as well as enterprise users with Workspace AI Ultra Access and AI Expanded Access. Google plans to roll out these features to all web-based Pro users in the coming weeks, accompanied by new output formats and advanced analytical tools. This seemingly simple name change represents a significant milestone in Google’s strategy to embed AI-driven notebooks deeper into professional productivity workflows.
