Google Removes Gemini from iOS Search App

Google is shaking things up by pulling its AI assistant, Gemini, out of the main Google app on iOS devices. The big G wants you to grab the standalone Gemini app instead, hoping to go head-to-head with popular AI chatbots like ChatGPT, Claude, and Perplexity. But here's the thing: this move might shrink Gemini's audience since the Google app is already a staple on millions of phones, and not everyone's keen on downloading yet another app.
They sent out an email to let everyone know that "Gemini is no longer available in the Google app." If you're still into using Gemini on your iOS device, they're nudging you to download the Gemini app from the App Store. It's been available worldwide for iOS users since late last year, but until now, you could still use Gemini within the main Google app.
With the Gemini app on iOS, you can chat with the AI assistant through Gemini Live, link up your Google services like Search, YouTube, Maps, and Gmail, ask questions, dive into topics, plan trips, get AI-generated summaries and deep dives, create images, and more. You've got options to interact with Gemini via text, voice, or even your camera.
The email also drops a reminder that Gemini isn't perfect and can mess up sometimes, so it's a good idea to double-check its responses.
If you're thinking about upgrading to Gemini Advanced, you can do that through the iOS app with a Google One AI Premium plan, available as an in-app purchase.
Try to access Gemini through the main Google app on iOS, and you'll be greeted with a full-screen message saying "Gemini now has its own app" and a handy link to download it from the App Store.
It's a bit of a gamble for Google to push users toward downloading a new app rather than keeping Gemini within the widely-used Google app. Sure, it might make it easier to roll out new AI features, but there's a chance fewer people will end up using Gemini if they don't bother to make the switch.

Google pulling Gemini from the iOS app is a bit of a bummer, but I get it. They want us to use the standalone app. I've tried it, and it's pretty slick, but it's another app to manage. Still, if it can compete with ChatGPT, I'm in. Just wish they'd keep it in the main app too, you know?

Google pulling Gemini from the iOS app? Honestly, it's a bit of a hassle to download another app just to use it. I get they want to compete with ChatGPT, but come on, convenience matters! Still, the standalone app is pretty slick, so I guess I'll give it a shot.
