Google Maps integrates Gemini for one-sentence trip plans and 3D immersive navigation, its biggest upgrade in a decade

Amid AIGC's transformation of the software landscape, the world's most popular navigation app has hit its "AI moment." Google CEO Sundar Pichai confirmed that Google Maps now offers two major Gemini-powered features: "Ask Maps" and "Immersive Navigation." Google says this is the app's biggest update in over a decade.
The update particularly excites travel lovers, thanks to the "Ask Maps" feature. It turns the map from a "search address" tool into a "lifestyle-savvy" personal assistant. Planning a weekend getaway? No need to scour social platforms for tips. Just ask the map: "Find a cozy restaurant near my office with a table for four at 7 PM that offers vegetarian options," and Gemini will instantly analyze vast user reviews, photos, and real-time traffic data to deliver precise personalized recommendations, even booking a table on the spot.
Beyond chat, Google Maps ' visual capabilities have entered the 3D era. The new "Immersive Navigation" uses the Gemini model to render billions of street view and aerial photos in real time. It not only accurately depicts buildings, greenery, and terrain but also clearly shows small road details like traffic lights and crosswalks. This "bird's-eye view" navigation experience will significantly reduce the chance of drivers taking wrong turns at complex interchanges or unfamiliar intersections.
Intelligent improvements also appear in many details. For instance, as you near your destination, the map automatically highlights building entrances and nearby parking. When searching for a route, it analyzes five million pieces of global traffic data per second, like an experienced driver, to compare the pros and cons of different routes.
Currently, the Ask Maps feature launched first in the United States and India, while immersive navigation will roll out gradually on iOS and Android devices. As Gemini integrates fully into Google 's office, search, and smart home ecosystems, the AI era where "a single sentence handles daily chores" is fast becoming reality.
