Recent code findings reveal that Google is preparing to integrate its Gemini AI assistant into the Apple CarPlay version of Google Maps, marking a significant leap in in-car navigation intelligence.
Gemini is already active in the Google Maps app on iPhones, enabling the "Ask Maps" feature to tackle complex real-world questions about destinations or surroundings. However, this capability was absent from CarPlay until now. The latest code indicates that after users accept updated terms of service on their phones, they can enable Gemini in the vehicle system, gaining more structured navigation guidance and detailed place information.
This capability relies on Apple's system-level openness. Starting with iOS 26.4, Apple has permitted third-party voice conversation apps to integrate more deeply with CarPlay, paving the way for Google to bring Gemini into the in-car ecosystem.
In practice, drivers will no longer be limited to conventional voice commands. With Gemini, users can engage in conversational interactions, such as asking for detailed destination info or seeking travel tips after starting navigation. Although this feature hasn't launched officially, the code framework is already embedded in the app, suggesting it will roll out worldwide after final testing.
With Gemini onboard, the lineup of AI assistants in CarPlay is expanding rapidly. Major AI services like ChatGPT, Grok, and Perplexity have already joined this ecosystem.
