Google officially launched its native Gemini application for macOS on Wednesday, strengthening its position in the desktop AI assistant market and offering a direct alternative to offerings from OpenAI and Anthropic. The app is now globally available for download to Gemini users on macOS 15 or later. A key feature is the global shortcut "Option + Spacebar," which allows users to instantly summon AI assistance without leaving their current window, moving beyond web-based interaction to a deeply integrated system-level experience.
Technically, the native app includes screen awareness functionality. This lets users share the content of their current window—including local files and complex charts—directly with the AI model for detailed analysis.
