Google Gemini lands on Mac as three AI models converge on Apple desktop, igniting an access-point war
The race to dominate the AI desktop space now has three major contenders.
On April 15, Google released a Mac-native version of Gemini, making it the third major AI service—alongside OpenAI and Anthropic—to land on the Mac platform. The timing is a clear signal that no one wants to miss out on the desktop market.
Built entirely in Swift and optimized for Apple devices, this is no simple web wrapper. The user experience stands out: pressing Option+Space opens a mini chat window, while Option+Shift+Space launches the full interface—no need to switch browser tabs. The menu bar icon and Dock also provide quick access. For frequent AI users, this on-demand workflow is far more convenient than opening a browser each time.

Screen awareness is a standout feature. Once authorized, Gemini can read the current screen content and offer contextual assistance during meetings, document writing, or research. It can actually "see" what you're working on, rather than simply waiting for a query. The app also supports multiple voice playback options and personalized settings like scheduled resets for the mini chat.
Pricing starts with a free tier offering limited usage. Paid plans come in three tiers: AI Plus at $7.99 per month, AI Pro at $19.99 per month, and the top-tier AI Ultra at $249.99 per month—a wide range. The app requires macOS 15 Sequoia or later.
Notably, Google has positioned this application as a "desktop assistant," not just a chat tool. According to the company, this is only the first step toward building a personalized, proactive desktop assistant, with more features expected in the coming months.
Compared to OpenAI and Anthropic, which established a Mac presence earlier, Google arrives later but with a clear differentiation strategy. Now all three players have staked their claim at the desktop AI entrance, and the real challenge ahead is who can retain users.
