Google Streamlines AI Mode Access in Chrome for iOS and Android
Google announced on Wednesday that accessing its AI Mode on mobile devices is now simpler. A new dedicated shortcut button located below the search bar on the Chrome "New Tab" page allows users to activate AI Mode directly within Search. This feature enables asking complex questions and follow-up inquiries to explore topics in greater depth.
The new AI Mode shortcut in Chrome launches in the U.S. starting Wednesday and will soon expand to 160 additional countries, supporting languages like Hindi, Indonesian, Japanese, Korean, Portuguese, and more.
By simplifying access to AI Mode on mobile, Google likely aims to encourage usage of its own service over competitor tools.

Google originally launched AI Mode in March to compete with popular services like Perplexity AI and OpenAI's ChatGPT Search. Since its debut, the company has consistently enhanced the tool with new capabilities.
Yesterday, Google introduced new agentic features in AI Mode, enabling users to get assistance with booking event tickets and scheduling beauty and wellness appointments. Google first introduced agentic capabilities in August, initially rolling out the ability to find restaurant reservations.
In July, AI Mode launched a Canvas feature that helps users create study plans and organize information across multiple sessions in a side panel. The feature now also supports using Google Lens to ask questions about content displayed on your desktop screen.

It's interesting but does this mean we're basically seeing Google Search become a chatbot shortcut now? 😏 Also curious how this 'AI mode' will be differentiated from the Gemini shortcut that already exists in some places. Feels like they keep adding entry points but the actual AI inside hasn't become that much smarter or more useful for me. It's just easier to get to... sometimes I want it to be a tool I use intentionally, not just something popping out of my search bar.
