Google DeepMind recently made a rare move in the AI industry—it established a full-time philosopher position, the first of its kind at a leading AI lab.
The position will be filled by Henry Shevlin, a scholar from the University of Cambridge, who is expected to join in May. His expertise lies not in algorithms or model architecture, but in machine consciousness, human-machine relationships, and whether humanity is prepared for the arrival of AGI. Crucially, he won't serve as a figurehead advisor; instead, he will be fully embedded in DeepMind's research workflow and take part in frontline work.
Upon closer examination, this appointment is quite thought-provoking.
For a long time, top labs have treated AGI primarily as an engineering challenge—focused on computing power, data, and architectural sophistication. But DeepMind is now signaling, through a concrete role, that the issue is far more complex.
When a machine begins to exhibit behavior resembling "consciousness," how should we define it? Where is the boundary between humans and AI? When AGI truly arrives, can society's ethical framework withstand it? Engineers alone cannot answer these questions.
At the same time, public fear and anxiety about AI development are spreading in the real world. Introducing a philosopher at this moment is, in a way, a response—an acknowledgment that these deep questions can no longer be ignored and must be confronted directly.
