Google AI Integrates Gmail and Photos for Personalized Responses
Google's conversational AI Mode, designed for complex queries, is becoming more personalized. The company announced it's integrating "Personal Intelligence" into AI Mode, allowing it to access your Gmail and Google Photos to deliver customized responses.
Personal Intelligence launched last week in the Gemini app, enabling the AI assistant to provide tailored answers by connecting data across Google services like Gmail, Photos, Search, and YouTube history.
This optional feature is now available to Google AI Pro and AI Ultra subscribers in the U.S. using English.
By incorporating Personal Intelligence into Gemini and AI Mode, Google utilizes the extensive user data within its ecosystem. Since many people already use Gmail and Photos, Google can offer personalized experiences that competitors find hard to replicate. Users who prefer not to share their photos and emails with AI can enable or disable Personal Intelligence anytime.
"With Personal Intelligence, recommendations align not only with your interests but also integrate smoothly into your daily life," explained Robby Stein, VP of Product for Google Search, in a blog post. "You won't need to repeatedly state your preferences or existing plans—it delivers customized recommendations from the outset."

Personal Intelligence allows AI Mode to use your hotel booking from Gmail and past travel photos from Google Photos to create a tailored itinerary. For instance, you might receive suggestions like a classic ice cream parlor based on your collection of ice cream selfies in Google Photos.
Google emphasizes that AI Mode goes beyond generic lists of restaurants and activities, offering a personalized foundation for your plans.

"If you need a new coat for an upcoming trip, AI Mode can factor in your preferred brands and flight details from Gmail to determine your destination and timing (such as Chicago in March). You'll receive recommendations for windproof, versatile coats that match both the weather and your style—like a personal shopper familiar with your itinerary and aesthetic preferences."
Other example queries include: "Create a scavenger hunt for [partner's name] to mark our anniversary. Include hints about us at each location," or "I'm decorating [child's name]'s bedroom—suggest theme ideas and decor options."
The company clarifies that AI Mode does not train directly on your Gmail or Google Photos data. Instead, it learns from specific prompts and the model's corresponding responses.
