On Tuesday, Google officially launched its fake call detection feature for Android, using an innovative "end-to-end digital handshake" to combat AI-powered deepfake voice scams at the source. The feature will roll out globally starting June 2026 for Phone by Google devices running Android 12 and above, with an initial launch on Pixel phones.
Scammers are increasingly using AI large language models to clone the voices of authorities, employers, or family members, forging convincing incoming calls for financial fraud. In response, Google's fake call detection feature is enabled by default and runs silently in the background.
When both parties use Google's phone service, the calling device automatically sends a silent confirmation signal to the recipient's device to verify its authenticity. If the system detects an AI impersonation, it sends a ping to the contact's real device. When it confirms the device did not initiate the call, a security warning appears on screen, prompting the user to hang up.
Notably, this anti-fraud network is built on the Rich Communication Services (RCS) standard and could be opened to other app ecosystems and third-party hardware makers. In the same update, Google also upgraded the complete outfit search feature in "Smart Selection Search" and launched an AI-powered virtual try-on called "Closet" in Google Photos for users in the US, India, and Pakistan.
This update highlights how, as the barrier to misuse of generative AI lowers, leading tech giants are shifting from traditional blacklisting to real-time identity verification based on underlying protocols. Edge-side security mechanisms are rapidly becoming a core defense in the smartphone ecosystem.
