GitHub Copilot Sets New Limits, Charges for Premium AI Models

GitHub Copilot, the AI coding assistant from Microsoft-owned GitHub, is set to increase costs for some users with the introduction of "premium requests." On Friday, GitHub unveiled a new system called "premium requests" for GitHub Copilot, which will impose rate limits when users opt for AI models other than the base model for advanced tasks like "agentic" coding and multi-file edits. While subscribers can still perform unlimited actions using the base model, OpenAI's GPT-4o, actions with newer models such as Anthropic's 3.7 Sonnet will now be limited. Starting May 5, GitHub announced that Copilot Pro subscribers, who pay $20 per month, will receive 300 monthly premium requests. Meanwhile, Copilot Business and Copilot Enterprise users will get 300 and 1,000 monthly premium requests, respectively, between May 12 and May 19. For those needing more, customers on any of these plans can buy additional premium requests at $0.04 each or upgrade to the new Copilot Pro+ plan. Priced at $39 per month starting, Copilot Pro+ includes 1,500 premium requests and access to top models like OpenAI's GPT-4.5, according to GitHub. This price adjustment for Copilot's more advanced models follows a similar move by AI coding platform Devin, hinting at the rising computational costs associated with these sophisticated models. Models like 3.7 Sonnet, which require more time to verify their responses, offer greater reliability but also demand more computing power. Despite these changes, GitHub Copilot remains a profitable venture. Microsoft CEO Satya Nadella revealed last August that Copilot was responsible for over 40% of GitHub's revenue growth in 2024, surpassing the total revenue of GitHub at the time of Microsoft's acquisition about seven years ago.

I used to love GitHub Copilot, but now with these new 'premium requests' and extra charges, it feels like a cash grab. It's frustrating to hit rate limits when you're in the middle of a coding session. I get that they need to make money, but this just feels like too much. Maybe they should offer more free requests or something?

GitHub Copilot

GitHub Copilot's new premium requests system is a bit of a bummer. I get that they need to make money, but charging extra for certain AI models? Feels like a cash grab. Still, it's useful for work, so I guess I'll have to bite the bullet. Anyone else feeling the pinch? 😅
