Generative AI Boosts Curiosity with LearnLM
Generative AI is shaking things up in the world of learning and education, offering new ways to help both teachers and students. It's pushing the boundaries of curiosity and understanding, and we're just scratching the surface of what it can do to transform how we learn.
Building a New Family of Models for Learning
We're excited to introduce LearnLM, our new family of models designed specifically for learning, built on the foundation of Gemini. LearnLM is the result of a collaborative effort between Google DeepMind, Google Research, and our product teams, all aimed at making learning more engaging, personalized, and effective. Our technical report dives into how we're enhancing generative AI for education and how we're partnering with the AI and EdTech communities to responsibly harness its potential for good.
Working hand-in-hand with educators and learning experts, we're weaving learning science principles into our models and the products they support. Here's a peek at what we're focusing on:
- Inspire active learning: Encourage practice and healthy struggle with timely feedback.
- Manage cognitive load: Deliver relevant, well-organized information in various formats.
- Adapt to the learner: Adjust dynamically to individual goals and needs, using relevant materials.
- Stimulate curiosity: Keep learners engaged and motivated throughout their journey.
- Deepen metacognition: Help learners plan, monitor, and reflect on their progress.
Bringing LearnLM to Products You Already Love
With LearnLM, we're enhancing the learning experience in products you're already using, like Search, YouTube, and Gemini chats, to help you gain deeper understanding, not just quick answers. Here are some examples:
- Google Search: Soon, you'll be able to better understand complex topics by adjusting your AI Overview to suit your needs, whether you want simpler language or a breakdown of the topic.
- Android's Circle to Search: This feature will help you solve math and physics problems right from your phone or tablet. Later this year, you'll tackle even trickier problems with symbolic formulas, diagrams, and graphs.
- Chatting with Gemini: You'll soon use Gems, custom versions of Gemini, to act as personal experts. The Learning coach Gem, launching soon, will guide you through study sessions with quizzes and games. With Gemini Advanced, you can tailor this Gem to your learning style.
- YouTube: A new conversational AI tool lets you "raise your hand" during educational videos to ask questions, get explanations, or take quizzes. This works even with long lectures, thanks to Gemini's long-context capabilities. It's already rolling out to select Android users in the U.S.
Applying LearnLM to Build Generative AI Experiences for Schools
We're also using LearnLM to create generative AI experiences for schools. Through a pilot program in Google Classroom, we're collaborating with educators to streamline lesson planning. These features will help teachers find new ideas, engaging materials, and tailor lessons to meet each student's needs. While no tech can replace a teacher's magic, AI can help by freeing up time for them to focus on their students and themselves.
Introducing Two New Experimental Tools to Advance Learning
Beyond LearnLM and our existing products, we're also developing new tools to expand learning:
- Illuminate: This experiment turns research papers into short audio conversations, summarizing key insights in minutes. Soon, you'll be able to ask follow-up questions. Check out the library at Labs.google and join the waitlist to create your own.
- Learn About: A new Labs experience that helps you explore topics at your own pace using high-quality content, learning science, and chat. You can upload files or notes and ask questions along the way. Sign up to be an early tester.
As AI evolves, new risks and questions will emerge. We're committed to building AI responsibly, addressing risks while maximizing benefits for people and society. Reimagining education with AI requires a collective effort. We've partnered with MIT RAISE to create an online course for educators on using generative AI in the classroom. As we expand LearnLM beyond our products, we'll work with institutions like Columbia Teachers College, Arizona State University, NYU Tisch, and Khan Academy to test and refine this technology. We want to build with you, so if you're interested in helping define educational benchmarks, improve academic capabilities, and explore the potential of generative AI in education, let us know. The possibilities, like our curiosity, are endless.

Generative AI in education? Sounds cool! I've seen some demos and it really sparks curiosity. It's like having a personal tutor that never gets tired. Can't wait to see how it evolves. Just hope it doesn't make traditional teaching obsolete!

IA generativa na educação? Parece legal! Vi algumas demonstrações e realmente desperta curiosidade. É como ter um tutor pessoal que nunca se cansa. Mal posso esperar para ver como isso evolui. Só espero que não torne o ensino tradicional obsoleto!
