Exploring AI on Screen: A Short Film Program

Reflecting on our favorite sci-fi movies often brings a sense of wonder about the future they envisioned. As a child, watching "Star Trek" and marveling at their communicators, the concept of instant communication via a small device seemed like pure fantasy. Fast forward to today, and my mobile phone embodies that once-distant future, transforming how we interact socially.
The influence of cinema on our perception and development of AI is equally profound. As artificial intelligence transitions from a fictional concept to a daily reality, movies offer a unique platform to delve into and illustrate the ways we envision living alongside this technology. To foster this cinematic exploration, we're excited to announce our partnership with Range Media Partners for the AI on Screen short film program.
Building a Filmmaking Ecosystem for the Future
Our collaboration with Range goes beyond mere financial support; it's about nurturing filmmakers at a crucial time when AI's impact on society demands thorough exploration and diverse perspectives. By working with Range Studios, we aim to leverage their top-tier development and production expertise to potentially expand these shorts into feature films.
Introducing "SWEETWATER" and "LUCID"
The first two films in our series, "SWEETWATER" penned by Sean Douglas and "LUCID" crafted by Sammi Cohen, are slated for release later this year. Following production, these films will be entered into key film festivals. Here's a glimpse into each:
A visit to his childhood home uncovers a piece of fan mail that introduces a startling AI, prompting the son of a late celebrity to confront his mother's legacy.
"SWEETWATER" is written by Sean Douglas and produced by Nick Gordon ("The Brutalist") and Rachel Douglas from Range. The executive producer is Penny Lin from Range Media. Sean Douglas is represented by Range.
In a bid to break free from their oppressive reality, a couple stakes everything on a groundbreaking dream-sharing device.
"LUCID" is written and directed by Sammi Cohen, with production by Rachel Douglas on behalf of Range. The executive producer is Penny Lin from Range Media. Sammi Cohen is represented by UTA and Range.
Exploring the Future of AI Storytellers
AI on Screen continues our efforts from last year, where we reimagined AI's visual portrayal through speculative photography. Our partnership with Range marks a significant stride in our ongoing commitment to fostering creative expression and exploring technology's potential through storytelling.
We're currently seeking emotionally compelling short film submissions across various genres, from science fiction and drama to thrillers and more. We're especially keen on original storytelling that aligns with our vision of exploring AI's future. Filmmakers interested in this opportunity can submit their project ideas directly to Range.
At the core of this program is our dedication to engaging with a diverse array of voices and creatives, aiming to connect with discerning, next-generation audiences. We firmly believe that the richest stories emerge from a broad spectrum of perspectives. We eagerly anticipate the innovative narratives that will arise from the AI on Screen short film program, the discussions they'll inspire, and the opportunity to share these remarkable films with the world.

Ach krass!
This article about AI in sci-fi films is super nostalgic! 'Star Trek' communicators blew my mind as a kid, and now my smartphone feels like it’s straight out of a movie. It’s wild how reality caught up with fiction. What’s next, AI directing the films? 😄
Ver IA em curtas-metragens é incrível! Adoro como traz a ficção científica à vida. Alguns filmes foram um pouco artísticos demais para mim, mas no geral, uma experiência legal. Mal posso esperar para ver mais! 🤖🎬
Ver IA en cortometrajes es impresionante! Me encanta cómo da vida a la ciencia ficción. Algunas películas fueron un poco demasiado artísticas para mí, pero en general, una experiencia genial. ¡No puedo esperar para ver más! 🤖🎬
