Indian startup Emergent unveiled its autonomous AI agent, Wingman, on Wednesday, marking its official entry into the agent software arena currently led by Anthropic and Microsoft. Wingman employs a "message-first" approach, seamlessly integrating with popular messaging apps like WhatsApp, Telegram, and iMessage. This allows users to manage daily tasks—such as handling emails and syncing calendars—effortlessly through simple voice or text commands.
Emergent has already built a community of over 8 million developers through its "vibe-coding" platform. The introduction of Wingman represents a strategic pivot for the company, shifting focus from "building software" to "software that operates itself." A key feature of this agent is its innovative "trust boundary" system, which automates routine operations while requiring human approval for significant decisions, directly addressing industry concerns about the reliability of fully autonomous systems. While Wingman already supports collaboration across different tools, CEO Mukund Jha noted that the system still encounters challenges with ambiguous objectives or complex scenarios needing nuanced human judgment.
Founded in 2025, Emergent now serves 1.5 million monthly active users. In a January funding round led by SoftBank, Khosla Ventures, and Lightspeed, the company secured $70 million, reaching a valuation of $300 million. Wingman's launch not only offers a more advanced productivity tool for its existing user base but also signals a broader trend: AI agents are evolving from standalone applications to becoming embedded within existing social and communication ecosystems. This decentralized, integrated model of interaction could well define how enterprise-level AI assistants collaborate with users in the future.
