Cursor Debuts Composer2, Acknowledges Moonshot AI's Open-Source Kimi as Foundation
This week, Cursor, a highly valued US AI coding startup, launched its new model, Composer2, which the company describes as having "cutting-edge coding intelligence." Soon after, controversy erupted on social platform X, where user Fynn presented code evidence suggesting that Composer2's underlying model is actually the open-source Kimi k2.5 recently released by Moonshot AI. Fynn questioned whether Cursor simply added reinforcement learning features without renaming the model ID.

In response, Lee Robinson, Cursor's vice president of education, quickly acknowledged that Composer2 was built on an open-source project. He clarified that only about a quarter of the final model's computation came from that open-source base, with the rest derived from Cursor's own training, resulting in significant performance differences from the original Kimi model. Moonshot AI subsequently confirmed the commercial licensing collaboration, stating that their Kimi k2.5 model was effectively integrated through Cursor's continued pre-training and high-compute reinforcement learning, consistent with the open model ecosystem's terms.
Although Cursor co-founder Aman Sanger later admitted that failing to mention the Kimi base in the initial announcement was an oversight, the incident reignited Silicon Valley discussions about technical purity and global supply chain collaboration. Amid an escalating global AI arms race, top US startups choosing high-performance Chinese open-source models for further development reflects the cross-border flow within the open-source ecosystem, as well as the delicate balance between brand storytelling and supply chain transparency for tech companies.
