Community Union and Google Partner to Boost AI Skills for UK Workers
Editor’s Note: Google has teamed up with Community Union in the UK to demonstrate how AI skills can enhance the capabilities of both office and operational workers. This pioneering program is part of a series of initiatives designed to integrate AI into the UK workforce. Google is collaborating with Multi Academy Trusts, SMBs, and Community Union to identify the most effective strategies for achieving a productivity boost valued at over £400bn by 2030. AI Enhances Member Engagement for Union Reps
Insights from Paul Thomas, Community Union Representative for the Logistics Sector
I became a union representative because I’m passionate about supporting my colleagues and addressing workplace challenges. It’s fulfilling to listen to our members, provide guidance, and collaborate on solutions that make a real difference in their lives.
Initially, I was skeptical about the relevance of Google’s AI Works training program for my role, given its focus on relationships. However, the AI skills I’ve acquired have transformed how I work.
For instance, AI tools like Gemini in Workspace streamline note-taking during meetings, allowing me to stay fully engaged in discussions and better serve our members.
This initiative has convinced me that AI is an essential tool we must embrace. I’m eager to share these skills with our members to help them seize the opportunities AI offers.

AI Skills Drive Career Opportunities for Union Members
Insights from Roy Rickhuss CBE, General Secretary, Community Union
Community Union sees immense potential in AI to make jobs more efficient, adaptable, and fulfilling for workers nationwide.
A recent Public First report highlights that with proper training, workers can save up to a day per week. This AI-driven productivity surge, led by union members, could contribute up to £89bn to the UK economy by 2030.
That’s why our collaboration with Google on the AI Works program is so exciting. It equips our 40,000 members across the UK with essential AI skills to stay ahead.
This partnership ensures workers are empowered by technology, not overshadowed by it. It’s about equipping them with skills to enhance their careers, enrich their work, and drive economic growth. We’re just getting started, and we’re thrilled about the positive impact this will have on our members and the broader economy.
