Cloudera and Mistral AI have formed a partnership to deliver customizable, sovereign AI directly to enterprise data, ensuring secure AI deployments across hybrid environments.
US-based data and AI company Cloudera and European AI lab Mistral have announced a strategic partnership designed to bring secure, sovereign AI directly to enterprise data.
This announcement coincides with Mistral’s completion of a massive €3bn (US$3.48bn) Series D funding round, achieving a post-money valuation exceeding €21bn (US$24.3bn). This marks the largest equity fundraising round ever completed by a European technology company.
Abhas Ricky, Chief Business Officer & GM, Applied AI at Cloudera, spoke exclusively to AI Magazine about the partnership: “Enterprise AI is shifting from accessing generic intelligence to creating specialized intelligence rooted in an organization’s own data, knowledge, and intellectual property.

“Our partnership with Mistral provides customers with a powerful way to make this transition, combining Mistral’s open, customizable models with Cloudera’s governed enterprise data and the ability to run AI wherever that data resides.
“The result is AI that is not only more relevant to the enterprise but fundamentally under its control—from the data and models to the infrastructure, inference, and economics.”
Sovereign intelligence
Cloudera and Mistral will integrate Cloudera’s hybrid data and AI platform with Mistral’s sovereign AI models. Mistral is often positioned as a European-centric sovereign AI developer that helps firms reduce their dependence on US technology.
Currently, the main players in the AI race are the US and China, with Europe lagging behind. McKinsey recently argued that the biggest impediments to AI adoption across Europe are concerns over trust, security, and national dependency.
“Our mission has always been to put frontier AI in the hands of every organization while keeping them in control of their technology,” Arthur Mensch, Co-Founder and CEO of Mistral, has previously stated.

The partnership between the two firms aims to enable organizations to bring intelligence directly to their data across cloud, on-premises, edge, sovereign, and air-gapped environments—without requiring sensitive information to leave their control.
Cloudera highlights that organizations can run inference privately, customize AI using proprietary data, and deploy AI applications within their existing security and governance boundaries—while gaining greater control over the economics of AI at scale.
How it will work
Mistral’s suite of frontier models and tools will be integrated with Cloudera’s hybrid data and AI platform, enabling customers to run their own custom AI models and applications across 30 exabytes of data.
The partnership will span Mistral’s portfolio of frontier AI models and tools, including reasoning, chat, coding, document intelligence, and voice. Cloudera highlights that this will give its customers greater choice in how they apply AI to enterprise data.

The collaboration also aims to give customers greater flexibility over the economics of AI. Enterprises can choose the deployment model and infrastructure that best fit their workloads rather than depending exclusively on public API consumption models as AI usage scales.
Through the integration of Mistral Forge, a system for enterprises to build frontier-grade AI models grounded in their proprietary knowledge, organizations utilizing Cloudera’s platform will be able to customize and train models against large volumes of private enterprise data within controlled environments.
AI at the edge
Cloudera and Mistral say they also intend to collaborate on the next generation of “AI at the edge,” bringing increasingly capable inference closer to where enterprise data is created.
“Our mission is to make frontier AI available to enterprises without requiring them to give up control over their data, infrastructure, or intellectual property,” says Kamal Brar, SVP of Partnerships and Alliances at Mistral.

“Cloudera manages some of the world’s most valuable enterprise data estates, making this partnership a powerful opportunity to bring our technology directly to where that data lives. Together, we can give customers the ability to build AI that reflects their own data and expertise and deploy it securely wherever their business requires.”
In addition, the partnership expands the Cloudera Enterprise AI Ecosystem, through which Cloudera works with leading AI models, infrastructure, application, and technology providers to give customers flexibility in how they build and deploy enterprise AI.
