HomeClaude Chatbot Now Powered by Brave for Web Searches
Earlier this week, Anthropic introduced a web search feature to its AI chatbot, Claude, aligning it with competitors in the market. Initially, it was uncertain which search index was behind this new functionality, with speculation that Anthropic might have created its own. However, clues point towards Brave Search, developed by the browser company Brave, being the source.
Software engineer Antonio Zugaldia noticed on Friday that Anthropic included "Brave Search" in its documentation's "subprocessor list," which details partners handling Claude's data. Additionally, British programmer Simon Willison discovered that a search result from Claude matched one from Brave exactly. Willison also identified a parameter named "BraveSearchParams" within Claude's web search function.
We've contacted Anthropic for further details and will update our article upon receiving a response.
Interestingly, Brave also supports the search capabilities of another chatbot, Le Chat by Mistral. In February, Brave and Mistral announced that Le Chat would leverage Brave's search API for real-time web results.
It's worth noting that some AI firms are tight-lipped about their search index collaborations, possibly for strategic reasons. For instance, OpenAI collaborates with Bing but also taps into other undisclosed sources to enhance the search functionality in ChatGPT.
