China's Cyberspace Administration Launches Online Cleanup Campaign

To foster a clear and harmonious online environment during the Spring Festival, China's Cyberspace Administration has officially launched a one-month special campaign titled "Clean Web 2026: Creating a Joyful and Harmonious Online Space for the Spring Festival." This initiative will focus on addressing four major categories of online ecosystem issues that have drawn significant public concern.
Among these, "digital food waste" and other forms of low-quality AI-generated content have become key targets for governance. The administration has made it clear that it will take strong action against the use of AI to mass-produce logically flawed, information-poor content, as well as vulgar remixes and jokes that distort classic works and historical narratives.
Four Key Focus Areas of the Special Campaign:
Malicious Incitement of Negative Emotions: This includes promoting harmful values such as anti-marriage and anti-natalist sentiments, stirring up gender-based antagonism, flaunting wealth through comparisons of Spring Festival purchases, and organizing "fan circles" to launch attacks and smear campaigns.
Cleaning Up "Digital Food Waste" and Spam: This primarily targets AI-generated "inspirational" online articles, false "expert" advice, and marketing content that maliciously dramatizes conflicts between in-laws or within families.
Cracking Down on False Information and Rumors: This involves strict penalties for fabricating rumors related to the Spring Festival travel rush and holiday supplies, combating "clickbait" headlines that forge official announcements, and misleading impersonations of public figures.
Blocking Traffic for Illegal Activities: This includes intercepting traffic directed to gambling via sports predictions, curbing the promotion of pornography under topics like "Spring Festival companions," and stopping the provision of illegal superstitious fortune-telling services.
