ChatGPT’s improved image generation is now available for free

ChatGPT's latest image generator, which has been making waves for its ability to create spot-on Studio Ghibli-style art, is now open to everyone. Initially, OpenAI had to hit pause on rolling it out to folks beyond their paid subscribers due to the crazy demand.
Sam Altman, the big boss at OpenAI, took to X to share that the image generation feature is "now rolled out to all free users." There are some limits, though—ChatGPT keeps it vague, just mentioning that free users get "limited access." Altman had mentioned earlier that free users would be able to generate three images a day, and that's what I found out before the tool asked me to open my wallet.
The new image generation tool, powered by OpenAI's fancy GPT-4o model, first saw the light of day on March 25th. The plan was always to make it available across all of ChatGPT's subscription levels—Plus, Pro, Team, and Free. But just a day after launching, the rollout to free users got delayed. Altman quipped that "our GPUs are melting" because of the high demand. At one point, ChatGPT even gained a million new users in just one hour!
Just yesterday, OpenAI wrapped up a new funding round, pulling in a whopping $40 billion. That's the biggest funding round ever for a private tech company, pushing OpenAI's valuation up to a cool $300 billion.
