ChatGPT's GPT-4 Model to Retire Soon, Limited Access Continues for Some Users

When ChatGPT burst onto the scene back in 2022, it was powered by the impressive GPT-3.5. But fast forward to March 2023, and the even more advanced GPT-4 took over. Since then, we've seen the arrival of the powerhouse GPT-4o, set to replace GPT-4 and bring even more capabilities to the table.
On Thursday, OpenAI shook things up by announcing in their ChatGPT release notes that they're retiring GPT-4 as of April 30, paving the way for the superior GPT-4o. In their changelog, OpenAI highlighted that GPT-4o has outshined its predecessor in writing, coding, and STEM tasks during direct comparisons.
Honestly, saying goodbye to GPT-4 won't be too hard. The release of GPT-4o in May 2024 was a game-changer. The "o" stands for Omni, signaling its ability to handle text, audio, images, and videos, making it a true all-rounder compared to GPT-4.
Since its launch, GPT-4o hasn't stopped evolving. A significant update on March 27 boosted its skills in STEM problem-solving, coding, and improved its knack for following instructions and formatting. OpenAI proudly calls it the "natural successor" to GPT-4.
Right now, if you're a subscriber, you can still switch to GPT-4 via the model toggle, but you'll see a warning that it's on its way out come April 30. Developers and researchers, however, can continue using GPT-4 through the API even after its retirement, alongside other legacy models like GPT-3.5 and DALL-E 2.

This change won't affect free users, who are already using GPT-4o mini as their default, with limited access to GPT-4o and o3-mini. This announcement coincides with ChatGPT's latest feature update, enhancing its memory to pull from all your past chats, making your experience more tailored and personal.

GPT-4's retirement is kinda sad, but I'm excited for GPT-4o! It's like watching your favorite player get traded but knowing the new one is even better. Still, limited access to GPT-4? That's a bummer, but I guess it's time to move on and embrace the future! 🚀
