ChatGPT outage resolved after daylong disruption

OpenAI's ChatGPT service faced widespread disruptions throughout Tuesday, with numerous users unable to access the platform due to performance issues starting in the early morning. My colleague encountered a "Hmm...something seems to have gone wrong" error when attempting to load the chatbot, while reports of outages flooded social platforms like X and Reddit.
According to Downdetector, problems emerged around 3AM ET affecting multiple global regions. OpenAI's official status page acknowledged increased error rates and latency impacting ChatGPT, its Sora text-to-video tool, and API services. By 5:23AM ET, the company specifically flagged elevated error rates for Sora, later updating both services' status to "partial outage."
OpenAI's tracker indicated API restoration by 6:32PM ET, confirming that "Nearly all ChatGPT components are now functioning normally for users." However, voice mode continued experiencing higher-than-usual error rates.
While some users managed to access ChatGPT, many reported sluggish response times. Others, including myself, encountered no issues, suggesting the outages weren't universally affecting all users.
Perplexity, an AI search platform leveraging OpenAI models, also reported service slowness and increased error rates beginning around 7AM ET based on Downdetector data.
Update, June 10th: Added latest status updates from OpenAI and Perplexity.
