OpenAI is once again enhancing ChatGPT's memory capabilities, this time with a feature called "Memory with Search." Announced quietly through a changelog and support pages on their website, this new tool allows ChatGPT to use details from past conversations—like your favorite foods—to enhance web search queries. It's a subtle yet powerful upgrade that promises to make your interactions with the bot even more personalized and relevant.
Just yesterday, the ChatGPT release notes were updated to include o3 and o4-mini, added on April 16, 2025. But what caught everyone's attention was the mention of "Memory with Search." As Tibor Blaho pointed out on X, "anyone seen this rolling out already? Not for me yet."

This update follows closely on the heels of OpenAI's recent improvements to ChatGPT's memory tool, which now can reference a user's entire chat history. It's part of OpenAI's broader strategy to set ChatGPT apart from competitors like Anthropic's Claude and Google's Gemini, the latter of which also boasts a memory feature.
According to OpenAI's documentation, when Memory with Search is active and a user enters a prompt that requires a web search, ChatGPT will transform that prompt into a search query. This query can then tap into relevant information from the user's memory to make it more effective and useful. For instance, if ChatGPT "remembers" that you're vegan and live in San Francisco, it might convert the prompt "what are some restaurants near me that I’d like" into "good vegan restaurants, San Francisco."
If you're not keen on this feature, you can easily turn it off by disabling Memory in the ChatGPT settings menu. As for availability, it's a bit of a mystery right now—some users on X have reported seeing Memory with Search in action earlier this week, but it seems it's not yet widespread.

ChatGPT's new memory feature is kinda neat! It remembers stuff from our chats and uses it to make my searches better. It's like having a personal assistant that knows me. But sometimes it gets things wrong, which can be annoying. Still, it's a step in the right direction! 🤓

ChatGPT's new Memory with Search feature is pretty cool! Now it remembers my favorite foods and uses that to make my searches more personal. It's like having a friend who knows me well, but sometimes it gets a bit too personal, you know? Overall, it's a neat upgrade, just wish it had an 'off' switch for those times I want to keep things private. 😅
