This evolution transforms ChatGPT from a simple conversational tool into a form of intelligent cloud storage, equipped with robust archiving and management capabilities.
Shattering Conversation Barriers: Auto-Archiving and Cross-Chat Access
Historically, files uploaded by users were confined to a single conversation thread, forcing re-uploads for new discussions. The new Library feature fundamentally changes this approach.
Automatic Archiving: Documents, spreadsheets, presentations, and images shared during chats are automatically saved to your personal Library.
Instant Recall: Regardless of how many new conversations you initiate, clicking the attachment icon next to the input field and selecting "Add from Library" provides immediate access to previously uploaded files, significantly boosting productivity across multiple tasks.
Dual-Track Management: For better organization, user-uploaded files are stored in the Library, while images generated by ChatGPT are filed under a separate "Images" section.
Privacy and Permissions: A Private "Digital Vault" for Subscribers
This feature is currently exclusive to Plus, Team, and Enterprise subscribers. OpenAI has implemented a clear and firm privacy policy for data handling.
Independent Storage: Deleting a conversation does not automatically remove the associated files from your Library, safeguarding your data.
Full Deletion: When a user manually deletes a file from the Library, OpenAI commits to erasing it completely from its servers within 30 days. While this 30-day retention period may invite questions about compliance, the explicit deletion protocol offers crucial peace of mind for business users regularly handling sensitive information.
