"ChatGPT Now Edits Code Directly on macOS"

Hey, if you're a macOS user, you're in for a treat! The latest version of the ChatGPT app now lets you edit code directly in your favorite developer tools like Xcode, VS Code, and JetBrains. And guess what? You can even turn on an "auto-apply" mode, so ChatGPT can make those edits without you having to lift a finger. Pretty cool, right?
If you're a subscriber to ChatGPT Plus, Pro, or Team, you can start using this nifty feature right away—just update your macOS app. OpenAI says that they'll roll out code editing to Enterprise, Edu, and free users next week, so keep an eye out for that.
Alexander Embiricos, who's part of OpenAI's product team working on desktop software, mentioned on X that the ChatGPT app for Windows will also get this direct code editing feature soon. So, Windows users, don't feel left out!

This new feature builds on OpenAI's "work with apps" capability, which they launched in beta back in November 2024. It lets the ChatGPT app for macOS read code in a bunch of dev-focused environments, so you don't have to keep copying and pasting code into ChatGPT.
With this direct code editing, ChatGPT is now going head-to-head with other popular AI coding tools like Cursor and GitHub Copilot. And word on the street is that OpenAI is planning to launch a dedicated product for software engineering in the near future.
AI coding assistants are all the rage these days. A recent GitHub poll found that most developers are using AI tools in some way. And Jared Friedman, a partner at Y Combinator, said that a quarter of the startups in their W25 batch have 95% of their codebases generated by AI. That's pretty wild!
But, of course, there are some downsides to using AI for coding. A survey from Harness found that developers spend more time debugging AI-generated code and dealing with security issues compared to code written by humans. And a Google report pointed out that while AI can speed up code reviews and improve documentation, it can also mess with delivery stability. So, it's a bit of a trade-off.

Whoa, ChatGPT editing code directly in Xcode? That’s a game-changer for macOS devs! I’m curious how ‘auto-apply’ handles complex projects—hope it doesn’t turn my code into a sci-fi horror show! 😅
