ByteDance Seed Unveils EdgeBench Benchmark to Redefine Agent Evolution Metrics
As artificial intelligence advances rapidly, measuring how well agents learn continuously in real-world scenarios has become a key focus for both researchers and industry. The ByteDance Seed team recently introduced "EdgeBench," a long-term benchmark that offers a new quantitative standard for this area of study.
EdgeBench's core strength is its emphasis on learning in real-world environments. It comprises 134 tasks spanning six domains, each requiring the agent to operate continuously for at least 12 hours. This design overcomes the limitations of short-term evaluations by more realistically simulating how agents perform over extended periods in complex, dynamic settings. The team gathered roughly 38,000 hours of interaction data to create this rigorous testing framework.

The findings reveal a notable pattern: agents' environmental learning performance closely follows a log-sigmoid curve, achieving an R² of 0.998. This indicates a highly regular learning process. Furthermore, data from September 2025 to May 2026 shows that the learning speed of state-of-the-art models increased significantly, doubling every three months.
EdgeBench has open-sourced 51 tasks along with its full evaluation framework for developers. While still in the academic exploration phase, it is the first benchmark to quantitatively characterize long-term environmental learning patterns. For AI researchers, these patterns offer not only a concrete metric for evaluating model performance but also guidance for enhancing agents' environmental adaptability and learning efficiency in the future.
