Apple's Senior Vice President of Services, Eddy Cue, delivered a sobering prediction today: the iPhone could follow the iPod into obsolescence within a decade. The driving force behind this potential shift, as expected, is artificial intelligence.
Cue made these comments during the Google Search antitrust remedies trial, highlighting AI's capacity to transform the technology sector and create opportunities for new market entrants.

Cue further explained that Apple's decision to discontinue the iPod was one of its boldest and most strategic moves. "Why would you kill your most profitable product?" he added.
This statement might appear surprising, considering the iPhone accounts for over half of Apple's revenue. However, Cue describes AI as a "massive technological disruption," noting that such shifts have historically dethroned industry leaders. "When I first arrived in Silicon Valley," he recalled, "the most dominant companies"—citing HP, Sun Microsystems, and Intel—"either no longer exist or have become far less influential."
Several firms have already attempted—unsuccessfully, so far—to replace smartphones with AI-powered gadgets. These early efforts, such as the Meta AI integrated into Ray-Ban Meta smart glasses, aimed to provide an AI assistant independent of a smartphone. Rumors suggest Apple is developing similar solutions, where users would interact with AI through peripheral devices like advanced smartwatches, future AirPods, and smart glasses.
